In her presentation Sophie Nutten examined the role of proteins and amino acids in infant feeding. Breastfeeding is the gold standard for infant feeding due to breast milk composition and its benefits on infant health. However if breastfeeding is not possible, infant formula as similar to breast milk as possible in its composition should be given to allow for appropriate growth and optimal development. Cow’s milk composition has a very different protein profile and allergies are associated with specific protein components and that allegenicity can be decreased by partially hydrolyzing or extensively hydrolyzing.
