In this presentation, Olga Sakwinska explains how research into the gut microbiota has made a lot of progress over the past 10 years.  We now know that the infant microbiota dynamically evolves in the first years of life, and recent technical advances have allowed us to associate each infant with its own unique and specific microbiota type.

Citing recent clinical intervention trials and observational data, Olga Sakwinska notes that the transfer of bifidobacteria and Bacteroides from the maternal gut are essential for normal infant gut microbiota seeding and severely disrupted by cesarean section and antibiotic use. She also describes some trials showing the positive effect of specific type of Human Milk Oligosaccharide (2’FL) on providing protection from respiratory infections and on decrease of antibiotic use. This protection appears to be mediated trough the support of age-related microbiome maturation.
