Anti-Fel d 1 antibodies are safe for cats to eat

Chicken eggs and egg products have been safely consumed for centuries, and the use of concentrated IgY antibodies from chicken eggs has been shown to be safe in other species. Although many cat owners who are sensitized to cat allergens may compromise their own health to keep their cat, they want an assurance of safety for their cat. For this reason, this study sought to confirm the safety of the egg ingredient containing anti-Fel d 1 antibodies.

In in vitro studies, no increases in mutation or chromosomal aberrations were observed. In a 6-month feeding trial in which 42 cats were divided into four groups and fed different levels of the anti-Fel d 1 egg product ingredient, the ingredient was well tolerated and there were no biologically meaningful changes in the cats’ clinical parameters or blood work that could be attributed to the ingredient. This study showed that the egg ingredient containing anti-Fel d 1 antibodies is safe when incorporated into a complete and balanced cat food.
