ASN 2018 - Samuel J. Fomon Award for Young Investigators
This award is given to a physician within 10 years from completion of medical postdoctoral training for outstanding work in the general area of pediatric nutrition; in particular, in infant nutrition, infant growth, or body composition. As the award honors Dr. Fomon, preclinical and/or clinical research that contributes to medical applications or produces impacts upon the practice of infant feeding will be recognized. The award is supported by the Nestlé Nutrition Institute.
Ariel A. Salas, M.D., M.S.P.H., Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatology at UAB, is named recipient for the 2018 Samuel J. Fomon Young Physician Award.
As principal investigator of the Early Progressive Feeding Trial, he conceptualized and designed the trial, obtained financial support to conduct the trial, and carried out the initial analysis. To date this is believed to be the only randomized trial of early progressive feeding conducted exclusively in extremely preterm infants.
