Food for thought: Nutritional needs during pregnancy

During pregnancy, many physiological changes in a woman’s body take place to allow for the normal growth and development of the baby. One of the most noticeable changes is weight gain within recommended ranges. Consequently, the nutritional needs of pregnant women are increased. They especially require more micronutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and docosahexaenoic acid. An adequate maternal nutrition during pregnancy is about great food choices from a variety of food groups to cover the increased needs for important micronutrients. Malnutrition and micronutrient insufficiencies are, however, quite common in pregnant women. Various clinical studies show beneficial effects of micronutrient supplementation during pregnancy on maternal and infant health.
