Antibodies against Fel d 1, the major cat allergen, bind and neutralize Fel d 1, preventing it from triggering an allergic response in sensitized individuals. A previous study showed that feeding cats a test diet with an egg product ingredient containing anti-Fel d 1 IgY antibodies reduced active Fel d 1 in the cats’ saliva starting in the third week of feeding. This study evaluated the effect of the test diet on active Fel d 1 levels on the cats’ hair. Hair samples were collected by brushing cats fed a control diet, followed by collection when the same cats were fed the test diet. Active Fel d 1 levels were reduced on the cats’ hair starting in the third week of feeding the test diet. The majority (86%) of cats showed at least a 30% reduction in active Fel d 1 compared to baseline, and the average decrease in Fel d 1 was 47%. This study showed that the test diet with anti-Fel d 1 IgY antibodies reduced active Fel d 1 levels on the cats’ hair.
