A well-balanced and varied diet always matters, but it’s especially important while breastfeeding. Breastfeeding increases the daily needs of many nutrients, mainly of certain micronutrients. In addition to promoting maternal health, a well-balanced diet is also important to ensure that the baby is getting all the nutrients it needs to thrive healthily. An insufficient maternal diet and nutritional status during breastfeeding can affect not only the mother’s health, but also the quality and quantity of breastmilk and hence the baby’s health. Research shows that maternal micronutrient supplementation may be needed to secure maternal intakes and those of her breastfed baby.
