Improving Nutrition in Critically ill Children Workshop (WFPICCS 2018)

Nutrition in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is an uphill battle as there are limited resources and data on the overall burden of malnutrition in the critically ill children. Coinciding with this burden is the heterogeneity of conditions existent among these patients.

Feeding the cardiac, neurologic, surgical/burns/trauma, oncologic, hepatologic, renal, and the critically ill obese child poses a challenge to the PICU multidisciplinary team caring for the patient.

Energy and protein provision plays a crucial role in the overall management of PICU patients that results in shorter length of ICU stay and better outcomes. Consequently, protein has been identified as the vital macronutrient aiding active therapy to be provided in part of early enteral nutrition, or parenteral nutrition, when needed.
