  • Principal architect of the WHO Child Growth Standards, now used in over 150 countries worldwide
  • Trained in medicine in Madrid and then completed  training in public health and epidemiology at the School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, United States, before moving to NIH to complete a PhD on fetal growth retardation
    • Then appointed as the coordinator of the Growth Assessment and Surveillance Unit at WHO in Geneva, Switzerland
  • Although carrying important policy responsibilities throughout most of her working life, Dr. de Onis maintained a strong foothold in academia and has published numerous seminal papers, including 15 that have become citation classics, having been cited over a thousand times
    • The paper describing the growth curves has been cited over 20,000 times
