- Research focus is on initial and continuous respiratory support of the newborn looking at new possibilities of synchronization and triggering as well as BPD detection
- In collaboration with the group of Stuart Hooper and Peter G. Davis at Monash and Melbourne University, AU, he spent some time as a visiting scientist in Australia and did research at the Spring8 ring accelerator in Japan
- More recently, his research group established an interest in human milk composition during lactation as well as probiotic supplementation of enterally fed ELGANs
- Research is funded by the German research Society (DFG) as well as the German Ministry of Research (BMBF) and the NHMRC (Australia)
- A peer reviewer for several journals in neonatology and on the editorial board of Frontiers Pulmonology as well as Sem Fetal and Neonatal Med
