Omega-3 fatty acids are associated with positive impacts on cell signaling and resolution of inflammation. Initially it was hypothesized as an intervention for post-natal depression and neurodevelopment in early childhood, however these did not show significant results in women and neurodevelopment in term infants. Interestingly, this initial hypothesis shifted to other possible outcomes of omega-3 supplementation such as in the reduction of preterm births and risks associated with it. Dr. Maria Makrides discusses the results of the trials, as well as recommendations on who can benefit the most with Omega-3 supplementation in pregnancy.
