While the incidence of many infectious diseases continues to decrease, worldwide, there is a clear increase in various immune disorders from allergies to some autoimmune disorders, which have an uncontrolled inflammation in common. Amongst the many risk factors, recent research point to a critical window of antigen exposure in early life, during which the gut microbiome and microbial exposure affects the immune development. Diet, exposure to antibiotics, mode of birth, geography, standard of hygiene, all affect the gut microbiome development early in life. Moreover, certain microbial metabolites of nutritional compounds, such as amino acids or non-digestible carbohydrates, provide beneficial signals to the immune system contributing to host health. Future research will aim to define microbial metabolites and next generation of probiotics to support adequate immune development and interventions of autoimmune disorders.
