Review of effective interventions in risk reduction and management of GDM

Malnutrition Obesity

Prof. Irene Cetin details that more women now are affected by obesity globally, thus increasing risk for pregnancy, and related health outcomes such as GDM. In her lecture, she brings to light new factors brought about by global change to be considered with GDM such as the increase in maternal age, stress, and low sun exposure, as well as new strategies to help reduce the risk, including supplementation and pharmacological interventions that can help lower risk of GDM. While diet and physical activity is the main recourse, it was found that myo-inositol and probiotics have the potential to prevent GDM in at-risk pregnant women, and also improve certain outcomes such as birthweight and risks for macrosomia.
