Human Milk Oligosaccharides in the Dietary Management of Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy

Allergy Nutrition & Disease Management

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) are complex, unconjugated glycans abundant in human milk. HMO survive in the GI tract and influence colonic microbiota. HMO bind to surface receptors on gut epithelial and immune cells, and act as soluble decoy receptors to block the attachment of microbes to cells. The first clinical trial of an extensively hydrolysed formula supplemented with the HMO, 2’FL and LNnT, has confirmed hypoallergenicity.
