Gut Talks Series: Microbiome and antibiotic associated diarrhea

Gut Microbiota

The establishment of gut microbiota occurs in the first years of live and this process happens in parallel with the immune system development. Antibiotic intake in early life is one of the factors that can negatively influence microbiota establishment. The over prescription and overuse of antibiotics can lead to dysbiosis and cause short, medium and long-term health effects. Antibiotic associated diarrhea (AAD) is a common problem in childhood, happening in between 5-40% of pediatric patients. L. rhamnosus GG is the probiotic strain with more clinical evidence available for both risk reduction and treatment of AAD.
