Referencing his experience as a secondary school teacher, Roy Ballam outlines current child health levels and policy approaches in the UK and explains efforts underway to support educators and communities.  He paints a bleak picture of the situation: one in five children enters school as obese, and by the age of 11, that has risen to one in three.  A quarter of five-year olds have poor dental health.  Fibre and micronutrient deficiencies are widespread.  Children receive less than 10 hours a year of food education.  He advocates compulsory food and nutrition education, the removal of barriers to effective teaching, the provision of resources relevant to the curriculum and an emphasis on parent/carer engagement to help children lead healthier lives.
