Meghan Azad focuses on the effects of antibiotic use in early life on the gut microbiome. Early-life antibiotic exposure is very common, with one-third of prescriptions being inappropriate. This has potentially adverse effects on the developing gut microbiota and related metabolic processes. Data from 13 epidemiologic studies showed a correlation between antibiotic exposure during critical periods of early development and the development of obesity
