Physical barriers, such as of the lungs, the gut and the skin, are an important corner stone in protecting against environmental pathogens, pollutants and antigens. Defects in these barrier functions are associated with certain health conditions including inflammatory bowel diseases, celiac disease or atopic dermatitis. During the toddler years, these physical barriers continue to develop. An adequate nutrition of toddlers, including certain micronutrients, fatty acids, probiotics and prebiotics, can support the developing barriers of first line protection.
