Gut Microbiota
New studies are revealing a strong connection between the gut microbiome and bone health—a relationship known as the gut-bone axis. This review article examines the pivotal role of the gut microbiome on bone metabolism and skeletal homeostasis by regulating immune responses, modulating hormone secretions, and producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Dysbiosis, or an imbalanced gut microbiota, can lead to decreased bone strength and quality. Ongoing research on targeted nutritional interventions, including probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics, shows promise in restoring a balanced microbiome and enhancing bone health by preventing bone loss and promoting bone formation.
