The Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis: A dynamic bi-directional communication

Gut Microbiota

The Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis represents a bi-directional communication between the gut microbes and the brain, and vice versa, through neural, endocrine and immune avenues. The gut microbiota can influence not only emotions and mood but also our ability to learn and think. Vice versa, stress, which is regulated by the brain can affect the gut microbiota. Diet is a major factor influencing the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis, and a number of dietary interventions which target the gut microbiota such as pro- and prebiotics and HMOs has been shown to positively influence the brain. Modulating gut microbiota through nutrition provides opportunities to shape the microbiota-gut-brain axis to promote neurodevelopment and support brain function throughout life.
