At a Nestlé Nutrition Institute sponsored satellite symposium held during the World Diabetes Congress in Melbourne, December 2013, international experts met to discuss the nutritional management of obesity in diabetes and how a new treatment paradigm is emerging. The experts highlighted that although substantial weight loss can reverse the metabolic syndrome including type 2 diabetes, this strategy is not widely used because weight loss using conventional diet-lifestyle measures is often not maintained in the long-term. However, a restricted energy diet as part of a structured weight maintenance programme allows patients to lose weight and maintain their weight loss.
