Tackling Nutrient Inadequacy in Toddlers and Preschool Children

Growth & Development

Toddlers and preschool children around the world have suboptimal dietary patterns, with typically low consumption of fruit, vegetables, dairy products and high intakes of sugar sweetened beverages. Micronutrient inadequacies (especially calcium and vitamin D) in toddlers are common. A dietary modelling study to investigate the theoretical nutritional impact of improving dairy consumption in Filipino children who typically consume no dairy products was performed and had shown that children who to drink at least one serving of milk or young child milk beverage (YCMB) per day to help reducing mineral and vitamin inadequacies. Moreover, including a serving of YCMB in the diet can improve the nutrient adequacy of iron, magnesium, selenium, zinc, vitamin B6, B12, D and folate. These nutrients are important to support physical and cognitive development as well as normal immune function during toddlerhood.
