Relevance of FGID in a daily pediatric practice

Speakers: Y. Vandenplas

Presented at NNI European Meeting: Early Nutrition Influence

Summary

Yvan Vandenplas defines functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) and their relevance to infant daily medical practice. He notes that they are frequently reported by new parents and data from France shows that FGID’s account for up to 80 percent of newborn clinical visits.  Time is the cure, according to Yvan Vandenplas.  Parents need reassurance and education and it is best to avoid medication and manage the symptoms with safe and effective dietary solutions.  He cites recent metanalysis of global studies of FGID’s and looks at the success rate of various infant formulas including different ingredients (partial hydrolysate, low lactose, palm oil-free, probiotics and prebiotics) which may help in cases of regurgitation, constipation and colic.
