This exclusive program for Registered Dietitians is designed to foster advanced knowledge, experience and enthusiasm for enteral nutrition as a primary therapy for adult patients in the acute care setting. This unique program provides an intimate and interactive educational experience.

The program will be conducted over five consecutive weeks via weekly telephone conference calls, augmented by reading assignments and quizzes. The conference calls are structured to provide didactic instruction, case study and article presentations, and the opportunity to share ideas with colleagues.

• Application of knowledge (45 minutes)

Week 1:Medical Team Fundamentals; Interpreting Clinical Studies; Case Presentations [2.0 hours]
• Effectively describe the mechanics of the medical team and the “nutrition team”
• Demonstrate how to present a clinical case to a medical team member
• Communicate the key points of published articles to the medical team effectively
• Identify basic statistics used in research
Week 2: Should Autophagy Drive Nutrition Therapy? [2.0 hours]
• Define Autophagy and explore its role in critical illness
• Explain why autophagy has been used as a rationale for not providing "forced mandatory feeding" the first week after admission to the ICU.
• Identify the contradictions in the concept that preservation of autophagy should direct early nutrition therapy in the ICU.
Week 3:Metabolic Response to Stress [2.0 hours]
• Identify patients at risk for catabolic stress
• Describe the common organ specific changes associated with the metabolic response
• List at least two ways to alleviate or attenuate the catabolic response
Week 4:Lessons Learned from Nutrition Guidelines and Evidence-Based Medicine [2.0 hours]
• Describe how nutrition guidelines are derived by the appropriate societal committee
• Identify the elements of the GRADE evaluation system
• List the differences between a prospective randomized trial, an observational cohort study, and a meta-analysis
Week 5:Nutrition in Cancer: Are We Making Progress? [2.0 hours]
• Identify the stage of cachexia in the cancer patient
• Discuss at least 3 roles nutrition support in the cancer patient can influence the quality of life
• Describe the relationship between inflammation cancer and nutrition and how it can influence outcome
Nestlé HealthCare Nutrition is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Registered Dietitians will receive up to 10 CPEUs for completion of this program. CPE Accredited Provider Number NE008.
By submitting an application for participation in the Nestlé Nutrition Institute Advanced Enteral Nutrition Program, you agree to the following expectations:
1. The participants are required to attend and interact on each of the five conference calls. The total amount of time for the five calls is 10 hours over a five week time frame (one call per week). The conference calls will last typically 2 hours. The conference calls will be held during work hours. The call in time will be as follows:
Week 1 through Week 5
3:00 - 5:00 pm ET
2:00 - 4:00 pm CT
1:00 - 3:00 MT
12:00 - 2:00 PT
2. Participants will complete all pre-work assignments including required reading and view video-based programs. It is estimated that this will require an additional 2 hours per week. Please note there will be a required reading assignment prior to the first call.
3. Participants will prepare a case study for weeks 2 through 5. Typically, three participants per call will be selected to present to the group. Estimated prep time is 1 hour.
4. Participants will prepare an article review for weeks 2 through 5. Estimated prep time is 1 hour. A list identifying who presents a case study and article review for each call is sent to all participants prior to the start of the course.
5. Participants will answer five questions following each call for weeks 1 through 5 and fax or email the responses. Estimated time is 15 minutes. Time will be allowed during the Q&A session to address the answers to the questions from the previous week.
