Despite the long hours of sunshine, Vitamin D deficiency is common in Mumbai! More people are being diagnosed with low levels of vitamin D and many of them are unaware of the cause. In a city like Mumbai, the limited exposure to sunlight and foods rich in Vitamin D is leading to its deficiency.

Sunlight is the main source of vitamin D, the deficiency of which may be attributed to low exposure during the day. Higher melanin content of the skin may lower its vitamin D-generating capability upon reception of sunlight.

Vitamin D deficiency may also occur due to low intake of certain foods like fish, dairy products, and grains. Medical conditions such as obesity, osteoporosis, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and psoriasis may also contribute to the vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D deficiency is usually diagnosed with the aid of vitamin D levels in the blood. Depression, fatigue, pain in the bones and joints, and general weakness are the most common symptoms of vitamin D deficiency.

The best and most effective treatment for correcting vitamin D deficiency is exposure to sunlight, a natural way to help your body make more vitamin D. Diet, supplements, or injections are other means of meeting the body’s vitamin D requirements.

Another way of supplementing the body with vitamin D is by consuming animal-based foods like egg yolk, fish, and cheese. Vegans may also include almonds, soy yogurt, mushrooms, and orange juice in their diet. The underlying medical causes may also require treatment.

Vitamin D deficiency is attributed to changing lifestyle and dietary habits. Exposure to sunlight and consumption of foods rich in vitamin D may lower the risk of vitamin D deficiency.
