Tomato juice may help reduce tummy flab and also improve metabolic profile: study

Have you ever considered tomato juice for reducing a flabby waist and improving blood parameters? Surprising as it may sound, Taiwanese researchers have found that consumption of a glass (280 ml) of tomato juice daily for 8 weeks has a direct effect on the waist circumference, cholesterol levels and markers of inflammation in healthy young women.

According to the researchers, the antioxidant lycopene contained in tomatoes may be responsible for this beneficial effect. A 280 ml glass of tomato juice provides 32.5mg of lycopene. The researchers published their results in the journal Nutrition.

As part of the study, the researchers enrolled 30 young healthy women and provided them with a glass of tomato juice to be consumed daily for 8 weeks. There was no control or placebo group and the women were told to continue their normal diet and exercise schedule. Twenty five of the participants completed the study.

The study found that daily consumption of 32.5 mg of lycopene from a glass of tomato juice brought about an average reduction in waist circumference of 1.6 cm and a 0.5kg reduction in body weight. In addition, tomato juice supplementation was associated with a 22% decrease in the levels of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), which is a potent marker of inflammation.

A 25% increase in adiponectin levels was also observed. Adiponectin, a hormone released by fat cells, is known to regulate insulin sensitivity and energy in the body. According to the researchers, tomato juice supplementation shifts the circulating adipokine levels to an anti-inflammatory profile.

Elaborating on the results of the study, the researchers said, “In this study, we showed that, in young healthy Taiwanese women, tomato juice supplementation resulted in a decrease in not only adiposity indices, peroxidative stress and serum cholesterol levels, but also in levels of inflammatory adipokine MCP-1 and an increase in the levels of anti-inflammatory adipokine adiponectin.” A huge body of research supports the beneficial effects of lycopene in the body. So if you are mulling over which fruit juice to gulp down, do give tomato juice a try!
