If you are into the habit of consuming increased amount of beverages that are sweetened, here’s some bad news for your health. Researches made in Sweden have shown that sweetened beverage when consumed in increased amount can result in an increased risk factor for strokes. Even a small amount like two servings of sweetened beverages per day can cause an ischemic kind of a stroke that affects the cerebral health and increase its risk up to 22%. Therefore, as researches have it, consumption of sweetened beverages has an adverse effect on the overall health of the consumer.

The link between consuming sweetened beverages and risk towards strokes

When people around the world are concerned with how to control diabetes, important information such as this is genuinely helpful. Scientists from the Stockholm University have come up with a link that can used to bridge the gap between the consumption of sweetened beverages and the increase of blood sugar levels as markers of inflammation and also an increase in blood sugar and weight of the body. It is found that the subsequent complications that come along with this are reduced levels of insulin causing diabetes, obesity, cerebral strokes etc. The Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University, have found out that an increased amount of soda intake can cause a serious risk to the heart of the consumer, if not taken in the correct dosage. That means if a person consumes a sweetened soft drink every day, he has 22% more risks of having a stroke. However, a rare consumption of soda, once in a while does not necessarily mean one has the risk of a stroke resulting out of it. The other possible adverse effects of daily consumption of sweetened beverages are dental problems, cardio vascular or heart related diseases, Diabetes (especially type 2) and the most common outcome-obesity.

Details of the research done in Sweden:

Research done on 32,575 women within the age of 43 and 84 in Sweden and 35,884 men aged between ages 45 to 79 have come out with interesting results. The blood glucose tests and other tests of the candidates confirmed that they were healthy and did not have any traces of cancer, blood sugar and other heart related diseases. Their consumption of sweetened beverages was monitored through a decade. During the study, about 3510 candidates were reported to have undergone a stroke, generally the ones who consumed higher amount of the sweetened beverages. The research also concluded that when the crossover trail in a controlled condition was applied to the young men, it showed that moderate or low intake of sweetened beverages caused lesser risks towards higher C reactive protein levels, thereby reducing chances of inflammation. It showed that an above moderate consumption of sweetened beverages had caused adverse effects on the blood sugar levels, exposing the candidate to the risk of acquiring Diabetes Type 2. The insulin production and concentration had reduced in the candidate and the body was at a direct risk of a possible cerebral stroke or a hemorrhagic stroke.
