Probiotic Shown to Support Digestive and Immune Health in Healthy Seniors

Posted:  Friday, August 30, 2013

Ganeden Biotech, a recognized world leader in the manufacturing and marketing of probiotics, and Reckitt Benckiser (RB), announce that GanedenBC30 probiotic supports digestive and immune health in healthy seniors, according to research just released at the University of Reading, England. The results of the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over study could have huge implications for the population of individuals over 65 that is growing at the fastest rate in history--an American turns 65 every 13 seconds; approximately 10,000 baby boomers retire every day.

The study demonstrated that GanedenBC30 supports digestive (increased healthy bacteria in the gut) and immune health (improved immune markers) in a healthy senior population.

Senior author of the study, Glenn Gibson, professor of Food Microbial Sciences at the University of Reading and president and founding member of the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics said: "When you are younger, you have a healthier balance of good and bad bacteria. As people age this balance shifts, and often the bad bacteria in the gut increases. In addition, people begin to experience more gastro-intestinal (GI) issues, along with changes in immune function as the majority of your immune cells are in the gut."

"This study has helped us gain a better understanding of how age affects the gut and to further establish that GanedenBC30 can help support GI and immune health," said David Keller, Vice President of Scientific Operations, Ganeden Biotech.

Full results are being prepared for publication.
