AlgaeCal – a plant based calcium source increases BMD in women
Women are prone to age-related declines in BMD, hence more at risk of developing bone related disorders. A new study reveals, long term supplementation of plant based calcium sources in female consumers increases BMD and is safe for consumption.
In a study entitled "A 7-Year Longitudinal Trial of the Safety and Efficacy of a Vitamin/Mineral Enhanced Plant-Sourced Calcium Supplement" featured in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition (JACN), Issue 35(2) 2016, the safety and efficacy of a vitamin/mineral enhanced plant-sourced calcium - AlgaeCal (AC) supplementation was examined in female consumers for seven years.
Female participants who had completed at least one dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) bone mineral density (BMD) scan (N = 172) and/or blood chemistry test (N = 30) were included in the study. Annually, the safety and efficacy were examined by determining changes in a 45-measurement blood chemistry panel and in BMD.
Results showed that the AlgaeCal (AC) supplement is safe with no adverse side effects as analysed by 45 blood chemistries. With regard to BMD, there was statistically significant annualised and consistent linear increase in BMD of 1.04% per year and 7.3% over the 7-year study period. In addition, the levels of blood lipids supported the safety of supplement without any risk of development of cardiovascular conditions.
The results of the present study were consistent with earlier short-term studies, suggesting AlgaeCal (AC) supplement can facilitate significant increases in total body BMD.
