A new concoction lowers blood sugar levels! Researchers from the Popular Autonomous University of Puebla (UPAEP) in Mexico have developed a novel drink, which consists of a mixture of agave and probiotic microorganisms.
The researchers tested the drink among a sample of 10 students. The students were given a glucose solution followed by 250 milliliters of the novel drink. The blood sugar levels of the students were measured after they had consumed the drink.
The researchers found a significant drop in the blood glucose levels after consumption of the drink. The glucose-lowering effect may be attributed to the presence of fructans or non-soluble fibers in the agave mead. These sugars exert a hypoglycaemic effect that keeps glucose levels in check.
The agave-based drink is non-alcoholic due to the application of a pasteurizing heat treatment technology, which prevents fermentation by microflora in the mead. The drink, with a shelf life of 20 days and 900 million lactic acid bacteria per milliliter, is recommended to people with diabetes and lactose intolerance.
Currently, the researchers are performing tests to check whether the agave-based drink is effective in disorders such as gastritis and irritable bowel syndrome. They are also planning to investigate the effect of the beverage in patients with overweight and obesity.
