Good liver health in a cup of coffee: study

Posted:  Thursday, October 16, 2014

Who doesn’t like to cuddle in a comfortable chair with a cup of hot steaming coffee and a great book? Turns out that a little coffee indulgence can yield a wonderful benefit - it can boost your health too. In great news for coffee aficionados, a recent research has found that drinking 3 or more cups of regular or decaffeinated coffee a day is associated with improved liver health. Although previous studies had mooted a possible beneficial effect of coffee on liver health, it was not clear whether its decaf version was also beneficial.

Published in the journal Hepatology, the study utilised data from the 1999-2010 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. It included information on over 27,000 subjects aged 20 years and older.

The researchers monitored the coffee intake of the subjects using a 24-hour dietary recall. They also measured the serum levels of liver function markers such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gamma glutamyl transaminase (GGT) to assess liver health. The results showed that subjects who drank 3 or more cups of coffee a day had lower levels of all the 4 liver enzymes as compared to those who did not drink coffee. The same effect was observed in subjects who drank only the decaf version of coffee.

"Our findings link total and decaffeinated coffee intake to lower liver enzyme levels. These data suggest that ingredients in coffee, other than caffeine, may promote liver health. Further studies are needed to identify these components," said Dr. Qian Xiao, the lead researcher.

Apart from lowering the risks of liver conditions such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer, coffee consumption is also associated with a reduction in the risk of the highly prevalent lifestyle diseases diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Besides identifying beneficial components other than caffeine, the present study has given us additional reasons to enjoy this much loved beverage.
