India is a heavily populated country and is in need of an updated system for registering the growing population. To facilitate this process, the government has undertaken initiatives to improve the registration of births and deaths.
Mr Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary, Minister of State for Home Affairs, conveyed to the Lok Sabha, the numerous steps initiated to improve the birth and death registrations. The minister stated that a nationwide database of medical institutions had been prepared to this effect. This database has enabled registration of about 85% of all births and 70% of deaths occurring in the country.
In another initiative to improve the registration process, the government has also developed a web-based application through which birth and death certificates are issued to the public free of cost.
