Early Life Microbial Colonization as a Determinant Factor for Health During Infancy and Childhood
Jalil Benyacoub, PhD
Immunology Group Leader, Nutrition & Health Research, Nestlé Research Center, Lausanne, Switzerland

The microbiota, gut barrier, immune system, constitutes the major components of host defense. Therefore, promoting the development of these systems and/or maintaining homeostasis is key to prevent or reduce infections and diseases. Neonates represent a particularly vulnerable population to diseases, in large part, due to immaturity of their gut and immune systems.
