Over the last three decades, significant progress in the care of the critically ill child has heightened the awareness of the role of appropriate nutritional support in improving survival and long-term outcomes. Sepsis, shock, major trauma and severe inflammation initiate a profound sequence of hormonal, metabolic and immunologic events that may increase resting energy requirements by 30–100%.
