The increasing global prevalence of type 2 diabetes, the serious morbidities associated with this condition, and the challenges both of those situations present to health care systems in all countries cause the Annales Editorial Committee to bring this topic to our readers’ attention. The nature of the anticipated impact of type 2 diabetes is most evident in the expectation that this condition will be among the major, if not the major reason for a decrease in life expectancy in western countries this century, and a serious setback in many developing countries who will have made significant progress in overcoming conditions long associated with undernutrition. Such a projection is unprecedented and, should it be realised, will represent the summation of many tragedies at individual and population levels, nearly all completely preventable.
