Current Nutritional Practices in PICU: Gaps, Challenges & Recommendations

In June 2014, Nestlé Nutrition Institute and the Society of Intensive Care Medicine (Singapore) jointly organized the “Asia Pacific- Middle East Consensus Working Group on Nutrition Therapy in the Paediatric Critical Care Environment”. Experts in paediatric nutrition from 8 countries in Asia and the Middle East region discussed the current gaps and challenges in Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) nutritional support, and possible ways to address them. World-renowned PICU nutrition expert, Dr Nilesh Mehta (Boston Children’s Hospital, Boston, USA) was invited to present state-of-the-art lectures on nutrition therapy in the paediatric critical care environment, in which he emphasized the importance of early nutritional screening, maintenance of energy and protein balance in the PICU, and the value of PICU outcomes in determining the effectiveness of nutrition practice.
