Iron deficient anaemia is defined as a decrease of blood haemoglobin (Hb) below normal levels due to iron deficiency. Iron deficiency is responsible for almost half of all anaemia’s world-wide.The causes of iron deficiency are numerous but largely result from one of the following: low dietary iron content; decreased iron intestinal absorption; increased requirements of iron; or excess loss of iron.

Obesity is defined when either the body mass index (BMI) [BMI = Weight (kg)/Height (m²)], is greater than the 97th percentile with respect to individual country tables, or when the weight of an individual exceeds 120% the ideal weight for height. The increasing prevalence of obesity in children and teenagers observed in both the Western world and in developing countries is concerning and poses many questions.
