Problems with swallowing due to oropharyngeal dysphagia are very common in older people. This is a major contributor to decline in health and function in later life, and an important risk factor for pneumonia and death. A NNI satellite symposium, Dysphagia: Science-based Methods for Early Detection and Management, was held at the 6th Congress of the European Union Geriatric Medicine Society (EUGMS). This symposium provided an expert review of the extent and nature of the problem, guidance as to the investigation and diagnosis of dysphagia, and a comprehensive overview of best management practices. Proceedings of this symposium are available here.
